World Day for Water - March 23rd
World Day for Water is the perfect time to look around your home for ways to reduce your water consumption. Most of the major newspapers will have a feature on Friday 21st (keep an eye out for AEM in The Advertiser!) with ways to conserve water. If you already have a tank, why not install a home pressure pump and put your rainwater tank to use. Our Summer Sale has been extended, so take this opportunity to get a gutsy little pump at a ridiculous price! With manual pumps for gardening from just $99, and fully automatic home pressure systems for just $185, you've got no excuse not to start using rainwater! |

Does motor efficiency drop
1-5% after a rewind?
Simple, robust and efficient, induction motors often convert 90% - 95% of input electrical power into mechanical work. Still, given the huge amount of energy they use, even minor changes in efficiency could have a big effect on operating costs. Claims that repair/rewinding inevitably decreases motor efficiency have been commonplace. Based largely on a handful of studies of mostly smaller motors (up to 22.5 kW), they often assert that efficiency drops 1 - 5% when a motor is rewound, and even more with repeated rewinds. In 2003, EASA and Nottingham University conducted extensive testing to see if rewinding a motor with good practice repair methods actually had any significant effect on motor efficiency. Scope of Products Evaluated
The study involved 22 new motors ranging from 37.5 to 225 kW and 2 smaller motors (5.5kW). These included:
Each new motor was run at full load until steady-state conditions were established and then load tested, dismantled and the windings burned out in a controlled-temperature burnout oven. Each motor was then stripped, rewound, reassembled and retested using the same test equipment as before. The results show that good practice repair methods (such as the EASA rewind guidelines, which AEM follows) maintain efficiency to within the range of accuracy that it is possible to measure using standard industry test procedures (± 0.2%), and may sometimes improve it. Tune in next time for a detailed look at the results. |
